Lawful Intercept

WildPackets´ OmniPeek Distributed Analysis Suite combines deep packet inspection with real-time analytics for monitoring and intercept capabilities for local and internet communications.

For over a decade WildPackets has worked closely with law enforcement agencies and governments around the world to support CALEA, MITA and ETSI capture requirements with easy-to-use software and hardware solutions which can be easily and covertly installed on target networks. Capture internet, LAN, WAN and WiFi email and instant messenger (IM) communications and view payload data in clear text displays so it appears just like it would to the targeted user. Collected data can include a digital signature for secure processing for admission as evidence.

WildPackets provides software and services to support law enforcement agencies and network service providers who must comply with court orders for electronic surveillance. Our Lawful Intercept software package takes the form of specialized “Plug-in” applications that perform deep packet inspection (DPI) within the WildPackets OmniPeek Network Analyzer.

These plug-ins are designed to conform to the legal requirements for lawful electronic surveillance, built on the foundation of requirements from government agencies and end-users of this data. Network performance analysis capabilities of OmniPeek provide immediate feedback on how new applications behave on the network and can predict the impact to existing, business-critical applications.

A health care provider planned to roll out a wireless network for voice and data for every doctor across a campus environment. The implementation involved new and existing infrastructure and the introduction of a new wireless ‘bedside’ application.

Our Solution WildPackets products were deployed in a sample, representative environment. Immediately, the network engineers were able to report on everything from issues with the handhelds dropping packets at the edge to backend issues involving slow SQL queries against the database.

Distributed Networks

OmniPeek Enterprise supports both local and remote data capture and analysis, making it the perfect solution for distributed network analysis.

Geographically distributed companies can no longer deal with network issues ‘the old-fashioned’ way - sending network engineers to physically visit a site with dedicated test hardware, generating data that can only be analyzed locally. This is too expensive, far too time consuming and functionally limits the analysis capability to a single individual. Organizations of all sizes are geographically distributed today. They require a distributed network management and analysis solutions that can seamlessly extend to remote locations so network administrators can monitor, analyze, and troubleshoot their entire network without having to leave their office.

A logistics company with several satellite offices needed to enable the core NOC (network operations center) to view and troubleshoot remote network segments, while offering the same functionality to individuals in the field and to network engineers or employees that may be resident at the remote site. The solution was also required to provide multi-tier, multi-topology analysis to improve the time-to-resolution for each network issue.

Omnipliance Network Recorders are strategically deployed both within the NOC and at each remote office. Analysts at the NOC use OmniPeek Enterprise Connect on a local machine to attach to the remote Omnipliance and perform data collection and analysis. Users outside of the NOC use OmniPeek Enterprise to view the same network traffic locally, and can also use OmniPeek Enterprise for detailed analysis of their own.

Network Baselining

Baselining is the process of recording network traffic and performance and saving the data for future reference or reviewing it for network performance analysis.

Once baselines are saved, they can be used as a benchmark with which to compare other traffic patterns. WatchPoint, together with OmniPeek Enterprise and Omnipliance Network Recorders, make it easy to baseline your network and application performance characteristics and then be immediately notified should anomalies occur or thresholds be exceeded.

Baselining provides the network administrator insight into expected behavior on the network and subsequently, the ability to notice changes to the environment. To be clear, people often think of expected behavior as always being good traffic, meaning that expected behavior of a network reflects when everything is running perfectly. This is incorrect. Think of "expected behavior" as known versus unknown traffic.

Human Resources Compliance

Network forensics allows you to gather the digital evidence for HR compliance investigations.

Is something wrong happening on your network? You suspect that an employee is violating a company policy. Cyber Security Attack Analysis

With the OmniPeek Distributed Analysis Suite, data is always available for reconstruction for easy analysis of cyber attacks and network security breaches.

Between 2008 and 2009, reported cyberattacks on U.S. government computer networks climbed 40% and tracked accounts of unauthorized access to government computers and installations of hostile programs rose 140% (from 3,928 combined incidents in 2007 to 5,488 in 2008).

And attacks aren´t limited to just the government sector. Cyber criminals can purchase access to botnets to steal data or worse. In June approximately 100,000 domains, including corporate domains from around the world were identified as part of the Golden Cash network.

Recently cyber criminals targeted South Korean and US government sites as well as popular social networking sites such as Twitter and Facebook, causing temporary outages. A 2009 Security Mega Trends Survey reported that 92% of respondents reported that their companies have had a cyber attack. As criminals get smarter and more savvy with their attacks, being able to detect and characterize attacks - whether they've just begun or occurred days ago - is crucial. Are you prepared?

All pertinent network traffic is collected in a single location, rather than scattered across the network. Data is captured in a common data format and does not need to be transferred or translated in any way for analysis. The NOC of a medium-sized online retailer suspected a network breach, and immediately contacted the Chief Security Officer. The CSO knew she must quickly determine:

Network Performance Management

WildPackets offers industry leading network performance management tools.
An accurate picture of key network metrics as they change over time can be an invaluable tool. Not only is this essential for resource planning, but it can also help managers to head off trouble before it starts in earnest. This can be as simple as identifying new applications that may soon be using enough bandwidth to have a serious impact on network performance. Fluctuations in the network resources used by a particular process may be transient, or they may signal a real change in user behavior. Good trending statistics can help to distinguish one case from the other, and help network managers plan accurately to meet user needs.

Network Performance Management through Monitoring and Problem Detection
A large part of the network manager´s job consists of watching for variances from normal. Not every anomaly is a problem, but every problem stems from an anomaly (or at least, that´s the ideal).

WatchPoint and the OmniPeek Distributed Analysis Suite make it easy to manage your network performance, day in, day out. Network statistics such as over-all utilization, counts of nodes and protocols, error rates, and so forth provide a quick overview of basic network functions. In many environments, managers may want items such as these to be displayed continuously or refreshed at frequent intervals throughout the day.

Individual applications or processes may also require a continuous or very frequent update and display, particularly at times and places where these processes are heavily loaded. DHCP and email servers, for example, are often under their heaviest load for a brief period at the start of a work day. The OmniPeek Distributed Analysis Suite automates the process of collecting, displaying and saving statistics on particular processes, as well as on the network as a whole. For example, you could use OmniPeek to automate the capture and calculation of statistics on all DHCP traffic on a segment, then save the statistics as HTML files every five minutes between 7:45 a.m. and 8:30 a.m., allowing you to check the most current DHCP statistics from any connected machine.

The Importance of Detecting Network Problems
The object of continuous or frequent network monitoring is to spot problems as they occur. Sometimes a user complaint about lost or degraded service is the first sign of trouble. This is not what network managers want. Ideally, they would like to be able to identify and correct problems before users notice through effective network performance management. When a problem is identified by a user, it is still necessary to refine the definition of the problem, and a network analyzer like OmniPeek are crucial tools in that process. There are a great variety of problems that can come up in any LAN or WLAN.

One example of a acute problem is the complete failure of a server or application process, or degradation to the point that workflows are seriously impaired or interrupted. Unlike intermittent problems, they don´t (as if by magic) appear to resolve themselves. Unlike chronic problems, they can be resolved immediately.

Network Security

WildPackets network monitoring solution gives IT administrators the ability to locate and trace the source of virus outbreaks.

IDS/IPS systems and other security solutions fail to provide network engineers with the details they need to locate and correct the source of an attack. Without detailed network analysis, security solutions are incomplete. Firewalls and other perimeter defenses do not provide enterprise networks with the protection they need from viruses, DoS attacks, and other forms of malware. Especially in the age of mobile users, laptops, and wireless networking, the danger facing networks comes from the inside.

Problems are not always as they appear. Using the distributed power of the OmniPeek Distributed Analysis Suite, the customer initiated multiple data captures. One capture, using OmniPeek Enterprise and its ability to capture and analyze wireless traffic, was initiated near the wireless clients experiencing the problem. A second capture was initiated from an OmniEngine software probe, installed on a dedicated Windows-based server that analyzed wired traffic from the wireless access point to the edge switch. An Omnipliance Network Recorder capturing and analyzing data 24/7 between the wired traffic from the edge switch to the network´s core switch was also utilized. A client was then rebooted to invoke the entire wireless authentication and connection process. During this process all three data captures were concurrently monitored using the OmniPeek Enterprise console.

The results indeed confirmed that things are not always as they seem. The wireless capture indicated no anomalies, as did the wired capture from the AP to the edge switch. However, OmniPeek analysis of the data on the third capture clearly illustrated that the edge switch was not forwarding DHCP packets to the core network where the DHCP server was running. Clients were therefore never receiving DHCP addresses, and could not connect to the network.

Planning and designing a WLAN

One of the advantages of 802.11 WLANs is their ability to dynamically adjust to changing conditions and to configure themselves to make the best use of available bandwidth. These capabilities work best, however, when the problems they address are kept within limits. To do this, you must understand the limits of the RF environment in the areas where wireless is to be deployed. This is best done by assessing the overall area over space and time to get a quantifiable baseline of your environment. OmniPeek provides the analytical and reporting capabilities you need to determine your "RF baseline" before deploying any 802.11 equipment, plan your overall 802.11 equipment layout and verify your 802.11 infrastructure design.

Managing a WLAN

Management of your WLAN begins with a simple “dashboard” view that you can use to quickly assess the overall health of your network. Securing the WLAN

Because they use radio transmissions, WLANs are inherently more difficult to secure than wired LANs. Simple encryption and authentication techniques such as WEP prevent outsiders from casually or inadvertently browsing your WLAN traffic, but they cannot stop a deliberate attack. WPA, and particularly WPA2 is quite secure today, and meets the need of the most demanding security officer.

Even the best passive defenses, however, must be paired with an active defense in order to really work. First, attempted breaches must be identified and stopped. Second, networks must be monitored to ensure that security policies are followed. OmniPeek can be used to monitor compliance with security policies, and to identify, intercept, log, and analyze unauthorized attempts to access the network. It can automatically respond to security threats in a variety of ways, making it ideal both for monitoring and for more focused analysis.

Troubleshooting

In an all-wireless environment, the only way to troubleshoot is to capture the packets off the air. In smaller satellite offices in particular, this all-wireless solution is increasingly common. It offers quick setup and can cover areas that would be awkward to serve with wiring, such as non-contiguous office spaces on the same floor. The only wired part of such networks may be the connection from the DSL modem, through the router to the access point.

Multi-Channel Analysis

Mobility drives unique requirements for network analysis. Access points are stationary - users are not. They roam from one AP to another, with the expectation that services will continue seamlessly. But what happens when they don´t? You can no longer analyze data from a single AP, or even from a single channel, since your network uses multiple, non-overlapping channels to avoid AP to AP (co-channel) interference.

Wireless clients move from AP to AP, and therefore from channel to channel, with no indication to the user. This can even happen when the user is stationary - a busy AP knocks the user off so the wireless client associates with another AP on another channel. To view these events, your network analysis solution must be able to capture all the data on all channels of interest, simultaneously.
Traditional solutions scan from channel to channel, leaving large gaps in the data. For example, you use the three non-overlapping channels in the b/g range, channels 1, 6 and 11. A typical scanning solution will miss two-thirds of the data as it scans from channel to channel. How can you use such a solution in the “real world” setting of mobile users?
